Design Miami/ Basel 2019 concluded its fourteenth edition with forty-five gallery presentations, fourteen Curios and collectible furniture and decorative art spanning more than 1,700 years of design history. Mid-century masterpieces, pre-Columbian textiles from 300 AD and important historic Japanese woven baskets were exhibited alongside debut contemporary works developed specifically for exhibition at the fair.
With fourteen Curio presentations, Design Miami/ Basel’s 2019 program was the most extensive in the fair’s history and highlighted experimental and rare design and decorative art from emerge and established makers, artists and galleries.
This was the first fair directed by newly appointed 2019 Curatorial Director, Aric Chen. Chen chose Elements: Earth as the fair’s theme, which was most prominently illustrated through the Design at Large exhibition at the fair’s entrance. Nine galleries participated in the Design at Large group exhibition examining the future of materials, resources and making in the age of the Anthropocene – the current geological epoch in which human activity has been the dominant force affecting and altering the planet.
