The Proper Hospitality group is redefining traditional luxury hospitality, targeting a new generation of affluent travellers who yearn not only for elevated services and amenities, but memorable stays and cultural connectivity.
Showcasing the best of what a destination has to offer, the Proper team intentionally selects creative locations and develops a locally immersive programme, providing one-of-a-kind experiences for locals and visitors alike. Proper has also engaged with culinary icons in each city to offer best-in-class food and beverage experiences – another defining characteristic for the rapidly expanding brand.
Kelly Wearstler is creative lead for the Proper brand, and is responsible for each hotel’s interior design, drawing local inspiration from each neighbourhood, while maintaining the brand’s recognisable mixture of quality, creativity and style.
Santa Monica Proper, located at 700 Wilshire Boulevard in the neighbourhood’s downtown core, is housed across two buildings that present contrasting styles; one is a 1928-built Spanish Colonial Revival landmark building and the other is a sleek, contemporary new-build. Linked by a suspended bridge, the resulting structure not only stands as a striking architectural standpoint in the neighborhood but also optimises the ocean breezes and abundant Californian sunlight.
The hotel is a lesson in restrained elegance, with nature-inspired palettes, light hardwood floors, and organic textures augmented by artworks from emerging local artists. The exquisitely pared-down aesthetics provide the stylish backdrop to the neighbourhood’s only indoor-outdoor rooftop playground, complete with pool, cabanas, restaurant and bar. A restaurant serving innovative Californian- and Mexican-inspired cuisine, devised by celebrated chefs Jessica Koslow and Gabriela Camara, followed by an expansive Ayurvedic spa, are also part of the hotel offering.
