A record number of us from Camron were in Miami last week for Design Miami/ and various satellite events around the city. This was by all accounts the best Design Miami/ to date, in terms of quality and curation of works presented and overall attendance by international collectors, press, designers, and art world glitterati. We welcomed over 700 international journalists this year.
Executive Director, Rodman Primack opened the 10th Anniversary of the fair last Tuesday along with co-founder Craig Robins, artist Marina Abramovic, Sam Keller, and the inaugural Design Visionary Award recipient, Peter Marino. The mayor of Miami also made a surprise appearance at the opening Press Conference.
35 of the world's leading design galleries, including 11 founding galleries, presented works spanning the 20th and 21st centuries, alongside 4 Design Curio booths, a new initiative that showcases individual cabinets of curiosities. Participating sponsors presented thoughtful installations in collaboration with designers and studios. Perrier-Jouët teamed up with Vienna-based mischer-traxler presenting Ephemerā, an installtion from their project 'Small Discoveries'. Swarovski presented 'Thinning Ice', an LED and crystal-filled exhibition space by Chicago-based architect Jeanne Gang and photographer James Balog. FENDI commissioned Dimore Studio to create a beautifully refined installation, 'The Roman Lounge'. And in addition to providing a VIP car service, Audi showcased its newest automobile within the fair, 'A Force From Within'. Design Miami/ raised the bar with its Collector's Lounge, entitled 38 Beams, designed by Seattle-based practice Olson Kundig.
Over in the Design District, visitors were in awe of the transformation of the neighborhood into a luxury fashion retail destination. Tom Ford, Bulgari, Hermes, Chanel, Louis Vuitton and over 50 other brands will open over the coming months. Architect Sou Fujimoto unveiled his latest building in the Palm Court next to a restored Buckminster Fuller Fly's Eye dome that doubles as the entrance to the underground car park. Also in the District, Bentley presented a stunning light installation by Massimo Uberti for its launch of Bentley Elements and Bisazza and Emilio Pucci married art, fashion and interiors with a glittering in-store installation. Design Miami/ even closed off 4 blocks of the District to host an outdoor seated dinner for 400 guests in honour of Peter Marino, which was documented by flying drones overhead.
The endless parties, champagne and sunshine also made this a week to remember. Bring on the next 10 years!
