TurnStyle, a new food hall and shopping destination, opened underground in the Columbus Circle subway station in April. More than 30 vendors occupy small storefronts lining the walkway, including Pressed Juicery, The Doughnuttery, Fika, Dog & Co., Project No. 8 and The New Stand.
I visited during the evening rush hour shortly after the opening. TurnStyle was buzzing with commuters and tourists stopping to pick up a small gift, snacks and even a bottle of wine. Developed by Susan Fine, TurnStyle took more than four years to complete the transformation from subway station to shopping mall. Architecture Outfit designed the space and, while it is only 27 feet wide, the interiors feel incredibly open and light. Glass storefronts, white steel columns and subway tiles made the space feel busy but not crowded.
There is no charge to enter TurnStyle as it is outside the subway entrance. Live performances will occur every afternoon. Hours for each shop vary.
TurnStyle Enter on any corner of 57th/58th Street and 8th Avenue
