In LA, I visited one of the latest international galleries to open a permanent space in the city. Spruth Magers, the Berlin-based gallery that represents Cindy Sherman, Richard Prince, and Ed Ruscha, among others, has just opened a new space on Wilshire Avenue, near LACMA.
There I saw their inaugural exhibition of work by LA-based artist John Baldessari. Part of a group of artists who were instrumental in the development of the West Coast Modernist movement in the 1950s and 1960s, John Baldessari is an important figure in the history of California-based artists.
His show at Spruth Magers consists of entirely new works that he created specifically for the opening of the new gallery. The works consists of large-scale, blown-up found photographs each captioned with an innocuous or confusing caption.
The John Baldessari show is on view at Spruth Magers through April 2, 2016. The gallery is located at 5900 Wilshire Blvd, directly across from LACMA.
