This summer’s installation from Creative Time, Fly by Night, is by the New York-based artist Duke Riley. His immersive public artwork presented at the Brooklyn Navy Yard is set to the backdrop of the Manhattan skyline.
Taking place at sunset, Riley works with pigeons – which reside in coops designed by Camron client Olson Kundig Architects atop a retired aircraft carrier – that, as a massive flock, twirl, swoop, and glide across the East River.
The showstopper: each bird has a small leg band, historically used to carry messages, lit by tiny LED lights to illuminate the sky. It is by far one of the most magical experiences to happen in New York – no small statement.
