Intelligence Betty Woodman: Theatre of the Domestic

This exhibition at the ICA brings vivid colour to the capital in the middle of a grey London winter. The first solo exhibition by 85 year old American artist Betty Woodman, one of the most important ceramicists today, these works combine her ceramics with her painting, creating substantial and beautiful sculptures. The idea of the vase is her main focus – the vase as vessel, as a figure or an animal. It’s easy to see that her influences derive from the Post Impressionists – Matisse, Bonnard and Picasso – in terms of the brilliant colours, curving shapes and inviting domestic interiors, as well as the classical forms of Etruscan and Ancient Roman vases.
