Design Miami/ is the global forum for design. Each fair brings together the most influential collectors, gallerists, designers, curators and critics from around the world in celebration of design culture and commerce. Occurring alongside the Art Basel fairs in Miami, USA each December and Basel, Switzerland each June, Design Miami/ has become the premier venue for collecting, exhibiting, discussing and creating collectible design.
The twelfth edition of Design Miami/ Basel will take place in Switzerland next week and will showcase the most diverse group of galleries ever presented in Basel. 47 gallerists from 11 countries will present a wide range of important works at the event with notable new inclusions such as Art Deco and Art Nouveau styles from first-time gallerist Robert Zehil of Monaco. 2017 also sees the first Latin American gallery join Design Miami/ Basel, Mercado Moderno from Rio de Janeiro, who will display a number of Brazilian modern works at the fair. Several gallerists will present feature shows from history’s most esteemed designers, Friedman Benda celebrates the centennial of Ettore Sottsass with rarely seen works by the designer showcased at the fair and Galerie Alain Marcelpoil will present work by French modernist Andre Sornay.
Design Miami/ Basel has tapped the visionary mind of notable American fashion designer Thom Browne to bring to life the 2017 Design at Large installation. This is the first time a fashion designer will conceive the ambitious, large-scale presentation. Known for his conceptual installations, Browne will exhibit a vast grid of the most important desks from the last one hundred years, including statement pieces from masters such as Jean Prouvé, beside the set installation from his Fall / Winter 2014 Men’s Runway Show. The Design Curio exhibition will also return to Basel for its third edition with ten participating brands and galleries offering snapshots into today’s design landscape through focused vignette’s throughout the fair’s halls.
As always at Design Miami/ Basel these presentations will be supported by a collection of satellite projects, collaborations, and design talks at the fair.
