Block Shop is a textile company that marries the traditional Indian hand block printing process with a modern California aesthetic. Founded in 2013, Block Shop is a direct collaboration between Los Angeles-based sisters Hopie and Lily Stockman and a community of master printers, dyers and weavers in the desert state of Rajasthan, India. Block Shop’s entire process – from designing on graph paper to block printing by hand – is manual. Their bold, geometric designs are inspired by the architecture and palette of the sisters’ three home bases: downtown Los Angeles, Joshua Tree, and Jaipur.
Block Shop began as a passion project while the Stockman sisters were in graduate school – Hopie at Harvard Business School and Lily at NYU for painting – in an effort to support the diminishing hand block printing tradition they studied in India. Block Shop quickly amassed a cult following for its iconic designs and transparent process, and has since grown into an international lifestyle brand with limited edition collections of scarves, pillows, kantha quilts and hand-woven dhurries (launching this fall).
Block Shop’s textile production adheres to centuries-old Indian techniques, underpinned by their mission of making heirloom textiles with low environmental impact and high social benefit. The sisters spend two months out of the year with their team in India researching techniques and materials, prototyping new designs, and expanding community healthcare initiatives into which Block Shop invests 5% of their profits.
Block Shop’s products are available in select boutiques around the world, and online.
