Waste not, want lots

Battling through the snow and the cold, we made our pilgrimage to the ‘Feeding of the 5000’ event at Trafalgar Square. The free lunch of epic proportions – a steaming bowl of vegetable curry and a bread roll for each of the 5000 hungry visitors – had been designed to highlight the spiralling problem of food waste, using ingredients deemed wonky and un-sellable by the high street. We were even allowed to take away our own bag of fresh, free produce. With the Bishop of London proclaiming that “there’s no taste in waste”, never has a winter harvest festival been so urban chic.

Cognac producer Courvoisier has teamed up with the edible architectural geniuses at Bompas and Parr to create the world’s largest cocktail in the world’s largest punch bowl. Pia, Jennifer and I popped along to an historic house in Portland Place to see this spectacle. After filling out a scary health and safety form and donning all manner of protective apparel, we gazed upon a lake of 4,000 litres of a brand new Courvoisier cocktail which is large enough to row a boat across!

Finally, the clouds parted and we glimpsed the sun! So I grabbed the opportunity to head down to the Design Real exhibition at the Serpentine, my favourite exhibition space. German product designer Konstantin Grcic has curated a brilliant presentation of contemporary design. Design Real focuses on ‘real items’ conceived within the last few decades that have made a significant impact on our lives such as economy flight chairs and robots! If you can’t get there in person you can see everything that’s on display at design-real.com

A touch of Paris has come to London in the shape of Colette‘s first pop-up shop. The Cube Store, which is situated within the Old Truman Brewery in Brick Lane, has collaborated with Nissan to host a quirky outlet which celebrates the best of the iconic store. There’s a mingling of quirky French designs as well as Japanese-inspired lifestyle products all hand picked by the discerning rue Saint- Honore emporium. You can also catch a glimpse of Nissan’s new car, which will be launched next year. The store will also host a series of fashion, music and art inspired events all to celebrate Japanese design.

A highlight of Design Miami was the dramatic reveal of the new Audi 8 at a specially built pavilion on South Beach close to the Fontainebleau Hotel in Miami. Audi, one of the key sponsors of Design Miami, has created a stunning piece of automobile art, all sinuous curves and gleaming lines. Designer Tom Dixon had created a special installation for the space entitled The Art of Progress. Afterwards we all enjoyed champagne on the terrace overlooking the ocean and a full moon added to the sense of magic and drama.
