This year’s Frieze Art Fair was as frenetic as ever. The huge structure in Regent’s Park makes a dramatic home for hundreds of galleries from around the world to show their best artists. With such variety on offer it’s impossible to give a general view of the event. If it’s figurative, abstract, conceptual, contemporary or cutting edge art you’re interested in, then Frieze had plenty on offer. Damian Hirst’s butterflies ‘pinned’ on glossy blue paint were memorable and it’s clear that the ‘Artist as a Brand’ is as important as ever. And how does and artist get a ‘name’…? Well, through PR of course!

As Obama supporters at Camron, I was delighted to discover this portrait of him by Jose Maria Cano at The Riflemaker Gallery booth at Zoo Art Fair. Taken from The Wall Street 100- which is an inspiration from newsprint, the portrait is made from wax which is the artist’s way of capturing these remarkable images. On a day when Obama received endorsement by Colin Powell- it was particularly poignant.

Jose Maria Cano will have his first solo exhibition in London next spring staged by the gallery.

Last Tuesday I had the pleasure of attending the opening of the new Saatchi Gallery in Chelsea. The spectacular building has been thoroughly renovated with the most stunning seamless wood floors I have ever seen in a public space. The inaugural exhibition ‘The Revolution Continues: New Chinese Art’ is an interesting collection that reflects on the emergence of work since censorship relaxed in China. The element that binds these works together is each artist’s attempt to shock and surprise the beholder. This must-see space and exhibit are free to the public thanks to a partnership with Philips de Pury & Company.

TASCHEN, the famous art book publisher with five exclusive stores around the world, has just opened its first UK shop at Duke of York Square, just off the King’s Road in London. Taschen have some incredible books- from the creative to the exotic- I especially loved the beautifully illustrated, very large coffee table books. The store itself is extremely striking, with golden bookshelves and inventive displays. Even though the gallery space in the basement isn’t open yet, a trip to the store is well worthwhile.

Forget Chanel No 5 – for a truly original fragrance, there are only a few places to go in London – and Liberty is definitely one of them, especially as this weekend saw the opening of Frederic Malle‘s Edition de Parfums in Liberty’s Beauty department – itself a cult destination among beauty aficionados. The seventeen fragrances, commissioned by Malle from some of the world’s most famous ‘noses’ offer real individuality and quality, from the voluptuousness of ‘Carnal Flower’ to the more masculine severity of ‘Cologne Bigarade’. And try out the futuristic-looking Scent Capsules for a new perfume experience- beam me up Scotty!
