When I first entered this exhibition I was greeted by interaction designer Cem Sever. Cem has worked with several tattoo artists to create Tattooar. He applied a black and white skull transfer to my arm and then, once I held it towards a digital mirror, the tattoo came alive! First arrows fired across the skull and then text appeared within a sequence of animations. Another fascinating exhibit included an AR book which unveils a virtual world made of paper cut-out animations. I left with far greater awareness of this incredibly powerful technology which combines the real and virtual worlds.

Yesterday at Decorex International 2011. Baroncelli was thrilled to be awarded the Best Contemporary Product Award from idfx for their new wall light, Rex. This stunning handmade design, in satin galvanised gold with cristallo rods, is part of a family of new lights from the global brand. By using individual metallic ‘curves’, bold geometric designs are created and can be adapted and transformed by adding further ‘curves’ at any time. To showcase these designs, Baroncelli worked with interior designer Kamini Ezralow to transform their stand into a luxurious sanctuary for visitors to engage with the imaginative display of stylish lights.

In celebration of London Fashion Week ‘The Sweat Shop’ has popped-up at Selfridges. Originally from Paris, the café-couture sewing workshop features talks and mini-master classes from the best in the business. From a lace workshop by the accessories designer Sandrine Doczekalski at Sonia Rykiel to classes in knitting, it’s a great opportunity for everyone to be inspired and get making during this fashion season.

I just flew back to London from NYC on 9/11. At 10AM yesterday, I made my way down to exactly where I stood in Soho 10 years ago just after the second tower fell. It was a personal and poignant moment for me as I looked down the long stretch of an empty Greene Street where those towers once stood. I know Americans and all those who watched their TVs from afar were also remembering that fateful day. The media covered it extensively and there were memorial services all day. In a way, this 10 year anniversary has brought us all some closure and reconciliation but will never be forgotten.

Last Wednesday, we were in New York with the Design Miami/ team to announce and celebrate David Adjaye as the 2011 Designer of the Year Award Winner. It was fitting that we did this over evening cocktails at the spectacular home of art and design collector Adam Lindemann, since David also designed the house and they collaborated on a book with Rizzoli called A House For An Art Collector. As part of his award, the Tanzanian-born architect will present Genesis, a wooden pavilion structure which will be located at the entrance to the Design Miami/ fair in December. A mighty big award indeed!
